To sew a courthouse steps quilt block, you will need the following materials:
- Fabric strips (at least 2 different colors)
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
- Quilting ruler
- Iron and ironing board
- Thread
Here are the steps to sew a courthouse steps quilt block:
-
Cut fabric strips: Cut your fabric strips into the desired width and length. A common size for courthouse steps blocks is 2.5 inches wide and varying lengths.
-
Sew the strips together: Take two strips of different colors and place them right sides together. Sew along one of the long edges using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowance to one side.
-
Add more strips: Continue adding strips to the unit, working your way around in a clockwise direction. Each new strip should be placed right sides together with the previous strip and sewn along one long edge using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowances to one side as you go.
-
Trim the block: Once you have added enough strips to make a block of the desired size, use a rotary cutter, quilting ruler, and cutting mat to trim the edges of the block to make it even.
-
Repeat: Repeat steps 2-4 to make additional courthouse steps blocks, using different color combinations as desired.
-
Assemble the quilt top: Arrange the courthouse steps blocks in a desired layout and sew them together using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press the seams to one side.
-
Quilt and finish: Once the quilt top is complete, add batting and backing fabric to make a quilt sandwich. Quilt as desired, either by machine or by hand. Finally, bind the edges of the quilt to finish it off.
