How to Sew an Easter Morning Quilt Block
The Easter Morning quilt block is a beautiful spring design that combines patchwork, appliqué egg shapes, and embroidery in soft pastel colors on a white or cream background. It's a wonderful block to use as a standalone decoration or as part of a seasonal quilt.
Materials Needed
- Assorted fabric scraps in pastel colors
- ¼ yard of white or cream fabric for the background
- Fusible webbing
- Embroidery floss in coordinating colors
- Embroidery needle
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat
- Ruler and iron
Step 1: Cut Your Fabric Pieces
Cut your pastel fabric scraps into squares and rectangles in varying sizes. Cut the white or cream background fabric into a 10½" square.
Step 2: Arrange the Fabric Pieces
Lay out your fabric pieces on the background fabric to create a pleasing design. Play around with the placement until you're happy with the overall look. A design wall or flat surface works well for this step.
Step 3: Appliqué the Eggs
Cut egg shapes from your pastel fabric scraps. Using fusible webbing, attach the eggs to the background fabric. Machine stitch or hand-stitch around the edges of the eggs to secure them in place.
Step 4: Embroider the Details
Using embroidery floss in coordinating colors, add decorative details to the eggs — lines, dots, flowers, or any design you like. This is where you can really make the block your own!
Step 5: Sew the Pieces Together
Once you're happy with the placement and embroidery, sew everything together using a ¼" seam allowance. Sew the pieces into rows, then join the rows to complete the block.
Step 6: Press the Block
Press the block with an iron to set the seams and give it a polished finish.
Congratulations! Your Easter Morning quilt block is complete. Repeat these steps to create additional blocks for a full quilt, or display it as a standalone seasonal decoration. Happy quilting!

How to Resize Quilt Blocks
The first step in modifying any quilt block is to decide on your finished block size. You can base this on doubling a pattern, cutting it in half, or working with your available fabric.
Note: When working from a pattern's cutting instructions, remove the seam allowance before scaling. For example, if your pattern calls for 3½″ squares, subtract the seam allowance (½″), double the finished size (3″ → 6″), then add the seam allowance back (½″) — giving you a 6½″ cut piece.
Resizing Square Blocks
Add ½″ to your finished block measurement. For a 4″ finished square, cut a 4½″ square of fabric.
Resizing Rectangular Blocks
Add ½″ to both the length and width. To double a 3″ × 4″ block, cut a 6½″ × 8½″ rectangle.
Resizing Half-Square Triangle Blocks
Add 7/8″ to the desired finished block size. For a 4″ finished HST block, cut 4⅞″ squares.
Resizing Quarter Square Triangle Blocks
Add 1¼″ to the desired finished block size. For a 4″ finished block, cut 5¼″ squares.
