The hourglass quilt block is a classic quilting design that can be created with a few simple steps. Here's how to sew an hourglass quilt block:
Materials you'll need:
- Two different fabrics (at least two colors) that contrast each other
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Quilting ruler
- Sewing machine
- Iron and ironing board
- Thread
- Pins
Steps:
-
Cut two fabric squares in the same size. The size of your squares depends on how big you want your finished hourglass quilt block to be.
-
Place the two fabric squares with right sides together.
-
Draw a line diagonally from corner to corner on the wrong side of one of the squares. Use a ruler to ensure the line is straight.
-
Pin the two squares together, making sure that they stay aligned.
-
Sew a 1/4 inch seam on each side of the drawn line.
-
Cut along the drawn line to create two half-square triangles.
-
Press the seam allowances to one side.
-
Place the two half-square triangles right sides together, making sure the seams match up.
-
Draw a line diagonally from corner to corner on the wrong side of one of the triangles.
-
Sew a 1/4 inch seam on each side of the drawn line.
-
Cut along the drawn line to create two hourglass quilt blocks.
-
Press the seams open or to one side.
Your hourglass quilt block is now complete! Repeat the above steps to create as many blocks as you need for your quilt project.

Press the seam together to set the seam. Then press towards the darkest fabric.
To trim the block to the exact size line up the diagonal 45°angle with the ruler on your seam.
And then carefully trim your block with a rotary cutter.
