How to Sew a Lattice Square Quilt Block

The Lattice Square quilt block creates an elegant woven grid effect by alternating narrow lattice strips with background fabric strips. It's a versatile and striking design that works beautifully in any color combination!

Materials Needed

  • Fabric for the lattice strips and background fabric
  • Ruler and rotary cutter or scissors
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Iron and ironing board

Cutting Guide

  • Lattice strips: cut 1½" wide strips to your required length
  • Background fabric: cut 2½" wide strips to your required length

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cut the lattice and background fabric strips to the lengths needed for your desired block size.
  2. Sew two lattice strips together along the long edge with a ¼" seam allowance. Press the seam to one side. Repeat until you have enough lattice strips to cover the width of your block.
  3. Cut the lattice strips into sections the same length as your background fabric strips.
  4. Sew the lattice and background strips together along the long edge with a ¼" seam allowance, alternating lattice and background strips. Press seam allowances to one side.
  5. Cut the strip set into sections the same width as your block.
  6. Arrange the sections into the lattice square pattern.
  7. Sew the sections together along the long edge with a ¼" seam allowance, matching the seams. Press seam allowances to one side.
  8. Trim the edges of the block to your desired size, making sure corners are square and edges are straight.

Congratulations — your Lattice Square quilt block is complete! Repeat these steps to create more blocks and assemble them into a quilt top.

Mitered Corners Technique

Mitered corners create neat, seamless 45-degree diagonal seams at the corners of a quilt block or border — giving a crisp, polished finish.

How to Resize Quilt Blocks

The first step in modifying any quilt block is to decide on your finished block size. You can base this on doubling a pattern, cutting it in half, or working with your available fabric.

Note: When working from a pattern's cutting instructions, remove the seam allowance before scaling. For example, if your pattern calls for 3½″ squares, subtract the seam allowance (½″), double the finished size (3″ → 6″), then add the seam allowance back (½″) — giving you a 6½″ cut piece.

Resizing Square Blocks

Add ½″ to your finished block measurement. For a 4″ finished square, cut a 4½″ square of fabric.

Resizing Rectangular Blocks

Add ½″ to both the length and width. To double a 3″ × 4″ block, cut a 6½″ × 8½″ rectangle.

Resizing Half-Square Triangle Blocks

Add 7/8″ to the desired finished block size. For a 4″ finished HST block, cut 4⅞″ squares.

Resizing Quarter Square Triangle Blocks

Add 1¼″ to the desired finished block size. For a 4″ finished block, cut 5¼″ squares.
