How to Sew a Lattice Square Quilt Block
The Lattice Square quilt block creates an elegant woven grid effect by alternating narrow lattice strips with background fabric strips. It's a versatile and striking design that works beautifully in any color combination!
Materials Needed
- Fabric for the lattice strips and background fabric
- Ruler and rotary cutter or scissors
- Sewing machine and thread
- Iron and ironing board
Cutting Guide
- Lattice strips: cut 1½" wide strips to your required length
- Background fabric: cut 2½" wide strips to your required length
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Cut the lattice and background fabric strips to the lengths needed for your desired block size.
- Sew two lattice strips together along the long edge with a ¼" seam allowance. Press the seam to one side. Repeat until you have enough lattice strips to cover the width of your block.
- Cut the lattice strips into sections the same length as your background fabric strips.
- Sew the lattice and background strips together along the long edge with a ¼" seam allowance, alternating lattice and background strips. Press seam allowances to one side.
- Cut the strip set into sections the same width as your block.
- Arrange the sections into the lattice square pattern.
- Sew the sections together along the long edge with a ¼" seam allowance, matching the seams. Press seam allowances to one side.
- Trim the edges of the block to your desired size, making sure corners are square and edges are straight.
Congratulations — your Lattice Square quilt block is complete! Repeat these steps to create more blocks and assemble them into a quilt top.
Mitered Corners Technique
Mitered corners create neat, seamless 45-degree diagonal seams at the corners of a quilt block or border — giving a crisp, polished finish.

How to Resize Quilt Blocks
The first step in modifying any quilt block is to decide on your finished block size. You can base this on doubling a pattern, cutting it in half, or working with your available fabric.
Note: When working from a pattern's cutting instructions, remove the seam allowance before scaling. For example, if your pattern calls for 3½″ squares, subtract the seam allowance (½″), double the finished size (3″ → 6″), then add the seam allowance back (½″) — giving you a 6½″ cut piece.
Resizing Square Blocks
Add ½″ to your finished block measurement. For a 4″ finished square, cut a 4½″ square of fabric.
Resizing Rectangular Blocks
Add ½″ to both the length and width. To double a 3″ × 4″ block, cut a 6½″ × 8½″ rectangle.
Resizing Half-Square Triangle Blocks
Add 7/8″ to the desired finished block size. For a 4″ finished HST block, cut 4⅞″ squares.
Resizing Quarter Square Triangle Blocks
Add 1¼″ to the desired finished block size. For a 4″ finished block, cut 5¼″ squares.
