How to Sew the Pattern Without a Name Quilt Block

The Pattern Without a Name is a wonderfully versatile quilt block that allows for endless layout possibilities. There are no strict rules for arrangement — experiment and let your creativity shine!

Materials Needed

  • Fabric of your choice (multiple colors or a single color)
  • Cutting mat
  • Rotary cutter
  • Quilting ruler
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Iron
  • Pins and scissors

Step 1: Select Your Fabric

Choose fabrics for your block. A single color creates a monochromatic look; multiple colors create a vibrant, varied appearance. Contrasting or complementary fabrics help the design stand out.

Step 2: Cut the Fabric

For each block, cut:

  • Four 4½" squares
  • Four 3" squares

Step 3: Create Half-Square Triangles (HSTs)

  1. Take each pair of 4½" squares and place them right sides together.
  2. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of one square.
  3. Sew a ¼" seam on both sides of the drawn line.
  4. Cut along the marked line to create two HSTs.
  5. Press the seams open or toward the darker fabric.

Step 4: Assemble the Block

  1. Take two HSTs and two 3" squares.
  2. Arrange them into a square block in any layout you like — there are no rules here, so experiment!
  3. Sew the pieces together with a ¼" seam allowance.
  4. Repeat with the remaining HSTs and squares to create additional blocks.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

  1. Trim any excess fabric and square up the block to your desired size.
  2. Press the block with an iron to make it flat and smooth.

Tips for Success

  • Accurate cutting and precise seam allowances ensure the block comes together neatly.
  • Pressing seams open or toward the darker fabric reduces bulk and creates a flatter surface.
  • Align seams carefully while sewing for a polished finish.
  • Try different fabric combinations, color placements, or block orientations to create unique variations.

How to Resize Quilt Blocks

The first step in modifying any quilt block is to decide on your finished block size. You can base this on doubling a pattern, cutting it in half, or working with your available fabric.

Note: When working from a pattern's cutting instructions, remove the seam allowance before scaling. For example, if your pattern calls for 3½″ squares, subtract the seam allowance (½″), double the finished size (3″ → 6″), then add the seam allowance back (½″) — giving you a 6½″ cut piece.

Resizing Square Blocks

Add ½″ to your finished block measurement. For a 4″ finished square, cut a 4½″ square of fabric.

Resizing Rectangular Blocks

Add ½″ to both the length and width. To double a 3″ × 4″ block, cut a 6½″ × 8½″ rectangle.

Resizing Half-Square Triangle Blocks

Add 7/8″ to the desired finished block size. For a 4″ finished HST block, cut 4⅞″ squares.

Resizing Quarter Square Triangle Blocks

Add 1¼″ to the desired finished block size. For a 4″ finished block, cut 5¼″ squares.
