To sew a streak of lightning quilt block, you will need the following materials and tools:
Materials:
- Fabric in two different colors (one for the lightning bolt and one for the background)
- Sewing thread
- Rotary cutter or fabric scissors
- Cutting mat
- Quilting ruler
- Sewing machine
- Iron and ironing board
Instructions:
-
Choose your fabric colors. For the lightning bolt, choose a color that will stand out against the background fabric.
-
Cut out the fabric pieces. You will need one large rectangle of the background fabric and two smaller rectangles of the lightning bolt fabric. Use your rotary cutter or fabric scissors to cut the fabric pieces to the following dimensions:
- Background fabric: 10.5 x 6.5 inches
- Lightning bolt fabric: 5.5 x 6.5 inches
-
Place the lightning bolt fabric rectangles right side up on top of the background fabric rectangle, with the shorter edges aligned. Make sure the fabrics are centered and there is an equal amount of background fabric on either side of the lightning bolt fabric.
-
Using a quilting ruler and a fabric marker, draw a diagonal line from the top corner of the lightning bolt fabric to the bottom corner of the background fabric on one side of the lightning bolt. Repeat on the other side.
-
Sew along the diagonal lines that you just drew, using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Trim off the excess fabric on either side of the seam, leaving a ¼ inch seam allowance.
-
Press the seams open.
-
Place the block right side down on your cutting mat and trim it to 10.5 x 6.5 inches, making sure the lightning bolt is centered.
-
Your streak of lightning quilt block is complete! Repeat these steps to make as many blocks as you need for your quilt.
