Sewing a tea leaf quilt block can be a fun and rewarding project. Here are the steps to sew a tea leaf quilt block:
Materials needed:
- Fabric in various shades of green (for the leaves) and background fabric
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Ruler
- Iron and ironing board
Instructions:
-
Cut out the fabric pieces for the tea leaf block. You will need the following pieces:
- Four 3.5" squares of background fabric
- Four 2.5" squares of green fabric
- Eight 2" x 3.5" rectangles of green fabric
-
Lay out the fabric pieces on a flat surface to plan the design of the tea leaf block. The four background squares will be the corners of the block, and the green squares and rectangles will form the tea leaf shapes.
-
Sew the tea leaf shapes together. Take two of the 2" x 3.5" green rectangles and place them right sides together. Sew along one of the 3.5" sides with a ¼" seam allowance. Press the seam open. Repeat with the remaining green rectangles until you have four pairs.
-
Take two pairs of green rectangles and place them right sides together. Sew along the long edge with a ¼" seam allowance. Press the seam open. Repeat with the remaining pairs of green rectangles until you have two sets of four rectangles sewn together.
-
Take one of the green squares and place it right sides together with one of the green rectangle sets. Sew along one edge with a ¼" seam allowance. Repeat with the other green square and green rectangle set.
-
Press the seams open. You should now have two tea leaf shapes.
-
Arrange the fabric pieces on a flat surface to form the tea leaf block. Place the tea leaf shapes diagonally across from each other on top of the background squares.
-
Sew the fabric pieces together. Take one of the tea leaf shapes and place it right sides together with a background square. Sew along the edge with a ¼" seam allowance. Press the seam open. Repeat with the other tea leaf shape and background square.
-
Take the two pieces you just sewed and place them right sides together, matching the corners of the background squares. Sew along the edges with a ¼" seam allowance, leaving a small opening for turning the block right side out.
-
Turn the block right side out and press it flat. Sew the opening closed by hand or with a sewing machine.
Congratulations! You have sewn a tea leaf quilt block. Repeat these steps to make as many tea leaf blocks as you need for your quilt project.
